Virgin EMI Records made UK chart history last week when nine singles from multiple artists represented by the label appeared in the Top 20 of the Official Singles Chart.
The label is the first to have achieved this feat since the Official Singles Chart began back in 1952. Among them are British artists including Lewis Capaldi, Hardy Caprio, Russ + Tion Wayne and Chvrches’ collaboration with US electronic artist Mashmello, as well as Taylor Swift's comeback single with Panic At The Disco's Brendon Urie.
Virgin EMI represented five singles in the Top 10 and nine in the Top 20 in The Official Singles Chart for the week ending May 10th.
“We’re delighted that Virgin EMI is able to help such a wide variety of acts, both global superstars and fresh homegrown talent achieve chart success,” Ted Cockle, Virgin EMI president, said.
Atlantic Records had 16 singles in the Top 20 back in March 2017 but these all came from the same artist, Ed Sheeran. This prompted a change in the rules from the Official Chart Company, making it easier for new tracks and artists to feature in the chart and limiting popular artists from dominating the singles chart. Now, only the three most popular tracks (based on sales and streams) from any one artist will feature in the Official Singles Chart Top 100.
Virgin EMI is currently preparing for the release of Lewis Capaldi’s debut album, which Cockle says is “set to bring some serious colour and laughter to the UK charts this coming summer”. Find out more on the Virgin EMI website.
